Balloch - Balloch Castle

Two Giant Redwoods stands in the 200 acre Balloch Castle Country Park at the southern end of Loch Lomond. One is a young tree of under ten years old. The original castle was built in 1238 but abandoned in 1390 in favour of a stronghold on the island of Inchmurrin. All that remains is a dip of the moat and the mound where it once stood. The modern castle was built in 1808 by Robert Lugar for John Buchanan of Ardoch. The extensive grounds hold a fairly wide variety of trees, so it is well worth a visit by anyone with arboreal interests.

Cumnock - Dumfries House

Featuring giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum), coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides). Verified occurrence recorded by Redwood World. Tam says " It gets to be an education chasing these trees down and photographing them as it has taken me to some fantastic spots both from a natural history as well as a historical point of view. Today I found out about a place called Dumfries House (which by the way is in Ayrshire not Dumfries and Galloway). It was designed and built by the Adam brothers (Robert and John) for the Fifth Earl of Dumfries in 1758. The estate was 1000s of acres in size and stretched for miles around the Ayrshire countryside near the village of Cumnock. All that aside I found two separate avenues of sequoias at different ends of the estate, at first I did not know these were connected in any way to Dumfries House. At one end of the estate is a farm called Hill farm (grid ref NS540200). Leading up to the farm from the main A70 trunk road there are about 25 Giant Sequoias. P.S. From a distance on one of the main routes near here I could see another lot of Giant's but I could not locate them, I now believe they are in the middle of this estate which is to be open to the public from next year (I can't wait). " Tam also told us of some interesting links " Check these links out 1 2 seemingly this house and estate has been in the news recently!!. " I have found the same thing, Tam, it is not only the search and discovery of these magnificent trees, part of the fun is the fantastic locations and the historical education accumulated along the way! " These photos are from the Gatehouse which originally led into the estate known as "Dumfries House". There is an avenue of 13 trees of substantial size the first tree is shown in the trunk photo. The Old chap who owns the gatehouse now also has the trees in his garden he was very friendly and it was he who let me know what the connection to the estate was. I told him these trees must be about 120-130 yrs old but he thought nearer 500 years (he was too helpful to disappoint, I didn't have the heart to contradict him). " On my travels I have often encountered people claiming a tree to be many hundreds of years old, and yes it often feels kinder not to contradict them, after all a Redwood at 100-years-old can certainly compare in size to many "ordinary" trees of far greater age.

Drumnadrochit - Balmacaan Wood

Featuring giant redwood / giant sequoia. Verified occurrence recorded by Redwood World. A discovery of three Giant Redwoods along the border of Balmacaan Wood means there may well be more lurking deeper in the woods ready to be found on a future longer exploration. The first had sadly lost its top in what looks to have been a fairly dramatic lightening strike. The other two trees are further down the track, standing on either side and one having a rather peculiar feature where it has wrapped itself over and around a small branch. This has to be taken into account when measuring its girth, nevertheless it is one of the biggest measured by Redwood World and easily in the top ten of the broadest Top Trunks . When measuring its partner across the track, although not such a wide beastie, it became apparent that this was one would be in the top thirty of the tallest Redwoods measured by us but not quite tall enough to earn a place on the Tallest Top Trunks table. This trip to Scotland was certainly living up to expectations so far!

Drumnadrochit - Kilmichael House

Thanks Tam for finding these three Giant Sequoia near Drumnadrochit. Tam says " On the road to Urquhart Castle travelling through the village of Drumnadrochit I found another three Giant Sequoias. They are in the grounds of Kilmichael House which the owner told me had once belonged to a local doctor. I logged on to NHS Highland and the site there had the following info" : "Dr David MacDonald, a native of Beauly, set up practice in Drumnadrochit in the late 1880s. He lived in Kilmichael House, his surgery was a wooden shed at the back of the house. Dr David did his rounds on horseback. He had two horses for this purpose. The upkeep was 15/- per horse per week. In later years he drove a motor car, a Swift, which was purchased for him by the community. Dr David was the first person in the Glen to drive a motor car." Tam continues "The owner told me that there had been a fourth at the back of the house but it had been cut down a few years ago and then she helped me to measure the trees which are in the front garden. The one right in front, nearest the house measures 7.88m. Of the other two - in the 2nd photo the left hand one is 7.33m and the right hand one is a huge 8.30m." Well done Tam for obtaining some history surrounding the trees and their location. I have found that owners are rarely other than friendly and are happy to supply details of their trees. Well, who would not be proud to have such marvellous living monuments on one's doorstep!

Edinburgh - Royal Botanic Garden

A location in Edinburgh, Lothian, Scotland featuring giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum), coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides). Verified occurrence recorded by Redwood World. Thanks to Tam for these photographs of three Dawn Redwoods in Edinburgh Royal Botanical Gardens. Tam wrote he "was visiting relations in Edinburgh today and went for a walk through the Royal Botanical Garden. Some wonderful trees are there including 3 Dawn redwoods I found next to the glass house, in the foreground there is a spectacular fossilised tree. It is a great place to visit and I kept my eyes on the skyline for any sequoias, could not see any, too big an area for a short visit, but I was happy to find a Japanese Red cedar planted in 1968." The above three pictures show the Japanese Red cedar, a nice view, and a Cedar. Although this is primarily a web site for Redwoods, there is always room for pictures of other trees.

Foyers - Sealladh An Loch

Thanks to Louie for helping to plant this young Giant Redwood sapling with permission from the house owners in August 2016. It is near the front of the drive of a fabulous holiday home called Sealladh An Loch on the South shore of Loch Ness. The tree should enjoy the Scottish weather as most Redwoods seem to thrive in Scotland, and hopefully it will become quite a landmark in the years ahead.

Inverness - Southside Road

Featuring giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum), coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides). Verified occurrence recorded by Redwood World. Two beauties stand in the grounds of MacKenzie Kerr Chartered Accountants on Southside Road. Both measured exactly the same height and look equally healthy. According to one of the employees, the house being used by the company was originally known as Redwoods, and they plan to have a new plaque showing this name made for the building.

Kenmore - Loch Tay

Thanks to Tam for sending his latest Scottish Redwood finds in September/October 2008. He wrote, "Not least of my findings were these I found at Kenmore at the head of Loch Tay in Perthshire. I remembered reading somewhere that there were some Coast Redwoods to be seen here and what beauties they are. I counted three Coast and a large Giant. All of these trees are over 8m in circumference. When I was showing the photos to my wife I remarked that at the base of these trees there always seems to be a scene of carnage with all the branches that fall off over the years, this can be seen in some of the snaps. There is a lovely woodland walk in among some huge trees including the Redwoods and some lovely examples of Douglas Fir and Silver Fir. The path is at the north eastern edge of the loch. I took this photo from the bridge over the Tay looking back towards the area where they can be found. " Tam also mentions, " The one frustrating thing with such huge trees is attempting to get the whole tree in the photo. I don't suppose I have to remind you of this though Ron." Yes, it can be extremely tricky sometimes. A lovely set of Redwoods, in a lovely part of the world. I have visited the area around Loch Tay myself in the past, but sadly before I was "into" Redwoods, although there are plenty of other beautiful sights in the area on which to feast one's eyes.

Lower Foyers - Grays Park

A location in Lower Foyers, Inverness-shire, Scotland featuring giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum), coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides). Verified occurrence recorded by Redwood World. A very unexpected find! Here are two of four Giant Redwood in Lower Foyers. They were discovered while driving to find the old and new power stations. Near to a road called Grays Park these four trees are surrounded by other trees and vegetation. Foyers Falls can be found nearby. It was barely a trickle in 2022, maybe the hydro-electric scheme has taken away some of its drama, added to a low rainfall in this year.

Perth - Ross Avenue

Featuring giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum), coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides). Verified occurrence recorded by Redwood World. We encountered this surprise find while on an evening stroll around the outskirts of Perth. It has a slightly odd shape in that it consists of a relatively slim overall profile in terms of its foliage and yet it has an incredibly stout trunk such as one would expect to see on a tree with larger branch spread. Peggy kindly sent some information about this tree. She wrote; "It is on the grounds of the old Cleeve House . If you take the google man down to the estate you can rotate 180 degrees and see the redwood a few blocks over."

Spean Bridge - Corriegour Lodge Hotel

Featuring giant redwood / giant sequoia. Verified occurrence recorded by Redwood World. Situated on the shores of Loch Lochy on the A82 road from Fort Augustus to Fort William are three Giant Redwoods standing in the grounds of the Corriegour Lodge Hotel. As can be seen from the photograph, one has lost its top, probably from a lightening strike, but it is still a tall tree. Thanks to Alex who advised about these trees by texting just before we got there. Then again, it would have been difficult to miss them on the small peninsula, silhouetted against the sky.
